Distance Education, in action at Red River College.
Recent findings from neurological research have resulted in
greater understanding of the importance of the early years in
children’s development. Supporting families as they raise their
children contributes to the health and wellness of children, as
well as the family as a whole. This in turn, helps build better
communities.
Community-based family resource programs provide
accessible, informal and effective supports for
families. Red
River College recognized that there was a gap in
educational
materials aimed at this sector. So they decided to
produce a portable
educational series, with national relevance, to
provide
inspiration for established programs, and practical
ideas for new ones. The series is also used in many
other audiences such as the health and education
sectors.

resource programs in Canada serving diverse communities in
the east, west, and central regions.
Even the Department of National Defence has a family resource
center to support their community on and off base!
Topics include: Reflecting and Supporting the Community;
Babies and Parents; Early
Years; and Supporting Families. The programs have
been distributed across Canada to community and government
agencies serving families. As well, the videos have been
screened at conferences and other gatherings resulting in an
increased public awareness of the importance and value of
family resource programs. The series is available for purchase
from the Family Resource
Program National web site.
